Stars descend on Orchard Road
By Rachel Scully, Multimedia Journalist
FEAST your eyes on icicles, LED lights, christmas trees and stars.
The shimmering ornaments and decorations at this year's Orchard Road Christmas Light-Up sets out to fill your hearts with the Christmas cheer.
'Starlit Christmas', the theme for this year's Christmas Light-Up, revolves around the universally recognised star-symbol representing love, peace and joy.
As such, Orchard Road has been divided into these three colour segments. Pink represents peace, blue represents joy and purple represents love. In its 27th year running since 1984, the Orchard Road Christmas Light-Up stretches over 2.2km starting from Tanglin Road down Singapore's most popular shopping belt.
This year, Starlit Christmas took over 6 weeks to put up, and will be on display every evening till 2nd January next year. Guest-of-honour President S R Nathan, officiated the Christmas Light-Up, sponsored by Hitachi, which is participating in the light-up for the 20th time. For over two decades, about $7 million has been raised for the Community Chest through the Christmas Light-Up Switch-On Ceremony.

'My paper' describes the increasing use of LED
Used to cost $50- $40, now it is in the range of around $20
LED prices are expected to fall within reach of domestic consumers
Increasingly, people are buying LED lightings for homes
In 5 to 10 years, LED lighting will be the primary light source

Achieving more by using LESS
With our busy schedules, we often complain about the rocketing electricity bills at the end of the month. It is the same for individuals, companies both private and public and non profit organisations. "Nothing spent nothing gain" is an old wisdom and it is time we think about it. Employing new technology is certainly more expensive, but what are the benefits? Our lives involve flourescent tubes whether one agrees or not. In terms of LED tubes replacing Fluorescents, the benefits are all too many. Most importantly, it cuts lighting costs up to 40%. So what is stopping the adoption?
It is the high initial cost that deters them. I agreed with that for a moment. As a trained auditor i look at fixed assets based on its lifespan and salvage value. LED tubes have longer lifespan and much higher salvage value than a fluorescent. The recycling of LED tubes are also possible as compared to Fluorescent. Last but not least, tax incentives are also available under section 14Q for renovation (lightings included). I believe many also knows about spreading the initial cost over over the assets' lifespan. This is in line with financial reporting standards under FRS16. This would have elimnate the prospects in dealing with a high initial cost. Through LED tubes, so much on electricity can be saved over the years.
Examining all these factors, i arrived at a conclusion. It is the mindset of people that prevents the EARTH from becoming healthy again. It is never easy to change our mindsets, but we have to keep trying. The first step is to think logically and dare to believe in yourself. My campaign: It is not about finding new energy sources, but changing the way we think. Using LEDs as compared to fluorescent maintains the same efficiency yet reduces the input. We have to think far. Lowering electricity consumption will increase Singapore's productivity and competitiveness. Many 1st world country are starting to change to that, do we wish to lag behind?

What is the base of your compact fluorescent lamp (CFL)?
CFL is commonly used at home for illuminating purposes. Some trivia to it would be; What is the base of your CFL? Knowing this will save you some trouble when you need to replace a spoilt lamp.
The 8 years old kind; GX23
Characteristics: 2 pins that are symmetrically side by side.
The recent kind; G24
Characteristics; 2 pins that have one slightly higher than the other. (well, i use this, what about you?)

Tips for choosing LED strips
How do you know what LED strip is suitable for you?
Instructions for selection:
1. Determine a suitable waterproof level (non waterproof, IP65, IP67).
(Non waterproof)
(IP65)
(IP67)
2. Determine whether single colour or multicolour (RGB) is required.
3. Determine the closeness of light required (no. of LEDs/meter).
4. Determine your required brightness( SMDs 3528 [basic], SMDs 5050[High bright]).

NTUC Rochor Centre Uses LED tubes
Our beloved Rochor branch NTUC has use LED tubes for illumination. The common aisles and products on displayed are as brightly depicted as before. I believe this is a trial on the adoption of LED tubes. Eventually, this can really save supermarkets a hugh amount in electricity bills.
A business should always look far and adopt strategies that can sustain itself in our competitive world. Using LEDs is definitely one strong way to go.
Disclaimer: Illuminating Asia SPL did not provide the lightings. We are just proud to be in this business and sharing with you what some Singapore businesses have done to help themselves and the environment !

Power consumption and cost savings Chart
The calculation is based on an EXTREMELY conservative approach.
1. The price of oil is Fix over 5 years of calculation(a reasonable assurance is that oil prices will continue to increase)
2. The cost of changing your fluorescents yearly are excluded. (Not to mention the trouble required to replace it) In the spreadsheet, I assumed the fluorescent lights (average 8,000-10,000hrs) have the same lifespan of 50,000hrs as the LED tubes.
With such prudent accounting, the Returns on investment and the cost savings is already so significant. Whats more if the above 2 points are included in the calculations.
The table reflects the fluorescent tubes' power usage in Singapore. Take note of the ballast efficiency. It is a component for the fluorescent lights to work. This increases our overall power consumption drastically. Hence, you wonder why your cost saving fluoresecent lights (CFLS) are not helping you much in saving electricity.
LED tubes do not need ballast! What you pay is what you see.
A potential savings of S$488,000 in 5 years!
An easily achievable ROI in less than 1.5 years
Ultimately, you are another great supporter for a better environment!
